Asbestos in Wellington
Wellington is one of the older towns in the region, with many homes built or extended before asbestos was phased out in the late 1980s. Fibro walls, eaves, sleepouts, bathroom and laundry linings and shed roofs are the usual suspects. If you're renovating, get it tested first. See how testing works.
Local disposal
The Wellington Waste Transfer Station on Nanima Village Road takes small loads of bonded asbestos sheeting (up to a box-trailer load) by appointment only, correctly wrapped in plastic. Call 02 6840 1778 first.
Larger amounts go to Whylandra near Dubbo, where asbestos customers aren't admitted after 4:15pm.
Who can remove it
In NSW, SafeWork NSW says a licensed professional must remove any friable asbestos and any amount of bonded (non-friable) asbestos over 10 m², and it recommends a licensed professional for any amount. See the NSW rules guide.
